Watch Earth transition into Spring from 1.5 million kilometers away.
On March 21st, 2025, day and night are equal in length across the entire planet. This is the spring equinox. From the L1 Lagrange point, 1.5 million kilometers away, the NASA/DSCOVR satellite captures Earth's axial tilt at the exact midpoint between winter and summer. In the northern hemisphere, snow melts, rivers swell and the flood season begins across Europe and North America. Arctic ice retreats, adding to sea level rise. Pollen seasons now start weeks earlier than a generation ago. Spring is also when the most violent tornadoes hit the United States, where cold polar air meets warm Gulf air head-on.
Vivaldi's sonnet for Spring, 1724:
Spring has come with joy
Welcomed by birds with joyous songs,
And the streams, amid gentle breezes,
Whisper softly as they flow.
The sky is covered in black and
Thunder and lightning announce the storm.
When they are silent, the birds
Resume their delicious songs.
And in the pleasant flowery meadow,
To the soft murmur of leaves and plants,
The goatherd sleeps, his faithful dog by his side.
To the happy sound of a rustic bagpipe,
Nymphs and shepherds dance in their favorite place
When spring appears in all its glory.
Vivaldi captured all of this in 1724. We added the real images of Earth.
